On Monday, Sept. 11, the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District announced that Melissa Argaman was appointed as the new principal of Oyster Bay High School.

Argaman’s new title was effective Thursday, Sept. 7, and came in the wake of previous principal Sharon Lasher’s retirement, the district said.

She originally joined the district in 2021, where she served as Oyster Bay High School’s supervisor of guidance before stepping in as acting principal for the second half of the 2022-2023 school year.

During her time as supervisor of guidance, the district says Argaman was “instrumental” in raising the graduation rate by more than seven percentage points in just two years.

She also created an alternative school for students in danger of failing, supervised counselors at the district’s middle and high school, was Oyster Bay High’s National Honor Society advisor, and was a Services for Students with Disabilities Coordinator for the College Board.

Before her time in Oyster Bay, Argaman worked as a school counselor at schools in New Hyde Park and Queens.

“I am thrilled to be given the honor of being named principal,” Argaman said in a statement, noting that “with two teenage boys of my own and over 20 years of experience…helping to support and encourage young adults is my passion.”

“By working collaboratively with teachers, students, and families, I am confident that we can provide a first-rate educational experience for all our students.”

Argaman received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Oswego before going on to earn a master’s degree in counseling from New York University and a professional diploma in school district leadership from Stony Brook University.
